USC Occupational Therapy and Science Council (OTSC)

Purpose

  • To represent Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy student interests to the Division, the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS), and the university
  • To provide students an opportunity to network, interact, and celebrate with graduate students of other programs by sponsoring, organizing, or advertising events for the purposes of education or socialization
  • To provide students with volunteer and fundraising opportunities to contribute to non-profit and non-governmental agencies around the world sharing our vision

April is OT Month! To celebrate, USC Chan and OTSC have coordinated a range of community service events to promote the distinct value of occupational therapy.Wear your OT Month buttons (distributed beginning April 2nd), take photos when you volunteer, and share on social media to help promote your profession! #USCChanGivesBack #OTMonth

To further incentivize your participation, we are making this a competition between programs/cohorts! Each event has points assigned and the group with the highest number of points at the end of the day on April 22nd will win a crepe party on Monday, April 23rd with USC Associate Dean and Chair Dr. Grace Baranek as well as OTSC Advisors Dr. Samia Rafeedie and Dr. Allison Chu! We are encouraging faculty and staff to volunteer as well and the faculty and staff members with the highest points will also be included in the party.

Event Descriptions

FITE Screening and Panel: From Incarceration to Education

April 5th, 4:00pm-7:00pm, Aresty Conference Center at 1450 Biggy Street

We’re hosting a reception, screening of FITE (Former Incarceration to Education) and hosting a panel to discuss education as a means to end recidivism, featuring student changemakers with lived experience, and faculty from USC Occupational Therapy Division and Gould School of Law working closely with the formerly incarcerated population. We need volunteers to help with setup/cleanup, greeting and contacting panelists, and checking in attendees.

Hygiene Kit Collection and Sorting Party

April 2nd-April 16th, CHP 139

We’re collecting travel size hygiene items from April 2nd through April 16th and sorting the items to create kits on April 16h from 4-6 pm. A collection box will be in the kitchen of CHP 139. All hygiene kits will be donated to the homeless and low-income population in McArthur Park as part of the Painted Brain’s Art Cart program.

     
  • 1 pt for donating (as many donations as possible!) AND the cohort that raises the most $ gets double the points! Donate here

Girls Mentorship Event for MOSTe: Motivating Our Students Through Experience

April 14th, 8:30am-1:30pm, USC University Park Campus

We’re hosting MOSTe middle school and high school students and their mentors for a panel on pursuing the profession of occupational therapy and a workshop on time management. MOSTe is a USC organization that empowers young girls in underserved communities of Los Angeles to pursue and graduate from college.

  • 2 pts for volunteering - 15 volunteers needed

Festival of Books Health Pavilion: OT Stations

April 22nd, 8:30am-5:30pm, USC University Park Campus

USC Chan Division will be part of the Health Sciences Pavilion at the LA Times Festival of Books on Sunday, April 22. It will be a fun-filled day of spreading the word about OT, engaging visitors with meaningful activities, and of course….books! This will include stations on sensory integration, weight management, and stress management. There will be a registered and licensed occupational therapist leading each station.

  • 2 pts for attending half day
  • 4 pts for attending full day
  • 30 volunteers needed
