Used with permission. Tract direction in this top down view of a monkey brain (axial scan) is conveyed by color (Red=L/R; Green=A/P, and Blue=S/I). The image was obtained using a high magnetic field 7-Tesla scanner. Neuronal pathways covered with white matter (myelin) permit more rapid communication in the brain. This image also highlights the remarkable connections between the two sides of the cortex, as well as from front to back, which permit the brain to integrate information and organize behavioral responses.
