Foundations of Lifestyle Redesign Course Series
The Foundations of Lifestyle Redesign Course Series is designed to fulfill several requirements for Lifestyle Redesign Certification, specifically, portions of the education and experience requirements. The courses are offered in a distance-learning/online format, meaning they are accessible to all learners worldwide. The Course Series consists of:
- THREE (3) Core Courses (total 46 hours)
- Paced asynchronous format - courses can be completed at preferred pace within the allotted period of time (varies per course)
- 2-4 hours per week spent on reviewing course lectures and completing assignments, if following suggested pacing for module completion
- Synchronous (“live”) participation is not required, though optional opportunities will be available
- Eligible for continuing education (CE) credit
- FOUR (4) Special Topics courses (total 12 hours)
- Self-paced asynchronous format - course assignments are due by the end of the 3-week period in which the courses are active
- Eligible for continuing education (CE) credit
- A Mentored Practicum in Lifestyle Redesign (OT 638)
- This is an academic, 14-week long course with weekly assignments
- 2 hours/week of synchronous (“live”) class sessions
- 2 hours/week of assignments outside of class
- Not eligible for continuing education (CE) credit
The Course Series takes a minimum of 12 months to complete, though, it is not required to complete the Course Series in this time frame. Participants are welcome to enroll in the courses at the frequency that suits them with the understanding that courses must be taken in sequential order. Course Tracks & Schedule
Beginning Fall 2025, there will be two Course Series “Tracks” available to CE learners:
Scheduled Course Series Track
- Courses have set start and end dates, once per calendar year
- Core Course 1: September 8 - October 24, 2025
- Core Course 2: November 10, 2025 - March 20, 2026
- Core Course 3: April 6 - May 1, 2026
- Mentored Practicum (OT 638): May 18 - August 13, 2026
- Special Topics Courses: available on-demand, year-round, beginning October 2025
- Access to 1:1 meeting opportunities with course instructor for individualized problem-solving and support
- Opportunities to attend multiple optional synchronous discussion sessions to connect with the course instructor and other course participants
- Learning activity feedback that is individualized to each learner
(NEW) On-Demand Course Series Track
- Courses available on-demand within 10 business days of registration (beginning October 2025) and should be completed in the window of time allotted (varies per course, see course descriptions below for course durations); excludes Mentored Practicum (OT 638)
- The window to complete a course would begin the day after course access is granted
- Access to drop-in meeting opportunities with course instructor through monthly Lifestyle Redesign Clinical Office Hours
- Learning activity feedback that represents general themes observed across learners
All other aspects of the courses remain the same for both Tracks:
- Courses utilize an online, paced, asynchronous format
- Prerequisites must be fulfilled in order for course access to be granted; refer to course descriptions in the drop-down below
- Anticipate an average of 2-4 hours per week interacting with course components, including reviewing course lectures and completing learning activities
- Synchronous (“live”) participation is not required, but optional opportunities are available
- Access to course instructor and technical support through email for questions and troubleshooting
Course Descriptions
Core Course 1: Foundations of Lifestyle Redesign (1.2 CEUs)
This course provides an overview of the history, core characteristics, and evidence base of Lifestyle Redesign. The course introduces evaluation, treatment planning, and goal setting within Lifestyle Redesign interventions, and provides an overview of the five core domains of Lifestyle Redesign and key terminology used in intervention delivery.
Core Course 1 is estimated at 12 hours of lecture content and assignments, to be completed across 7 weeks.
- Scheduled Course Series Track: typically offered September through October
- On-Demand Course Series Track: available on-demand within 10 business days of registration
Core Course 1 is a prerequisite for all other courses in the Course Series.

Core Course 2: Lifestyle Redesign Intervention Delivery (2.6 CEUs)
This course provides a deep dive into the five core domains utilized in Lifestyle Redesign interventions, as well as special considerations for intervention sequencing and discharge planning from a Lifestyle Redesign perspective.
- Domain 1, Meaningful occupations, habits, and routines, highlights the importance of performance patterns and daily occupations in shaping our health and well-being.
- Domain 2, Occupations relevant to wellness and managing chronic conditions, reviews occupations that support management of chronic conditions, such as eating routines, physical activity, medication management, and symptom tracking.
- Domain 3, Psychosocial well-being and mental health, discusses emotional regulation, coping strategies, and systemic factors that contribute to chronic stress.
- Domain 4, Environment and context, reviews how the physical and social context shape our experience of chronic conditions, discussing home safety, community mobility, social support, and life transitions.
- Domain 5, Advocacy and accessing healthcare, highlights important factors relevant to navigating the healthcare system and strategies for effectively communicating with providers.
Core Course 2 is estimated at 26 hours of lecture content and assignments, to be completed across 13 weeks.
- Scheduled Course Series Track: typically offered November through March with a winter break between late-December and mid-January
- On-Demand Course Series Track: available on-demand within 10 business days of registration

Core Course 3: Lifestyle Redesign Program Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (0.6 CEUs)
This course provides strategies for developing and implementing new Lifestyle Redesign programs in a range of settings, with relevant examples. Additionally, it reviews processes for program evaluation and monitoring, to ensure continued program success.
Core Course 3 is estimated at 6 hours of lecture content and assignments, to be completed across 4 weeks.

- On-Demand Course Series Track: available on-demand within 10 business days of registration

Special Topics Courses (0.3 CEUs each)
The Special Topics courses are designed for participants to obtain understanding of Lifestyle Redesign intervention for a specific patient population. Module 1 of each course will address population demographics and relevant statistics; pathophysiology, symptoms, and diagnostics for highlighted diagnoses; common comorbidities and/or precursors to diagnosis; functional and occupational impacts of diagnoses; and typical medical management of diagnoses, including multidisciplinary care. Module 2 of each course will address the application of Lifestyle Redesign core characteristics and core domains to the evaluation, assessment, and intervention care processes for the course’s specific population. Module 3 of each course will address program development and resources relevant to the course’s specific population (e.g., national organizations, patient programs, support groups, etc.).
The Special Topics courses are each 3 hours in duration, to be completed across 3 weeks. Beginning October 2025, these courses will be available on-demand within 10 business days of registration. Special Topics Courses currently offered include:
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Core Course 1, Core Course 2, and Core Course 3.
(4) Special Topics courses are required to meet Lifestyle Redesign Certification requirements.
Mentored Practicum in Lifestyle Redesign (OT 638, 2 semester units)
This is a 14-week semester course that requires participants attend a 2-hour online, synchronous class session each week, while practicing Lifestyle Redesign outside of class time (2 hours per week) with clients whom they access through their practice setting or other means. Participants will receive feedback about their application of the Lifestyle Redesign intervention framework, therapeutic approach, and documentation. Weekly discussion with the instructor and peers help to inform treatment planning and intervention delivery. The course requirements include two case studies with clinical observations, which serve to demonstrate competency in delivering Lifestyle Redesign interventions.
Prerequisites:
- A minimum of 12 hours of motivational interviewing (MI) training; practitioners are encouraged to independently seek out training via the MINT training website.
- Successful completion of Core Course 1, Core Course 2, and Core Course 3.

Course Costs
Refer to the table below for an overview of course registration costs for the 2025-2026 Course Series. Individual course costs are the same for all course schedule tracks. AOTA Members and Chan Alumni are eligible for a 10% discount on the continuing education (CE) courses; the information provided at the time of registration will be subject to verification (i.e., AOTA membership number, graduation year). The Mentored Practicum is not eligible for discounts as it is a USC academic course; the cost for this course is determined by the cost of USC tuition each year, currently $2,467 per unit.

(NEW) Bundled Scheduled Course Series
Beginning with the 2025-2026 course offerings, a discounted “bundled” course registration is available for participants interested in the Scheduled Course Series Track who intend to take Core Courses 1, 2, and 3 consecutively, in the same cycle (i.e. Fall 2025 through Spring 2026). The bundled discount only applies to the 3 Core Courses on the Scheduled Track and cannot be applied to the On-Demand versions of these courses. Please refer to the table below for an overview of the discounted costs.

Course Instructors
The instructors for the Foundations of Lifestyle Redesign Course Series are leaders in Lifestyle Redesign research, education and practice. Instructors are Lifestyle Redesign Certified licensed occupational therapists with doctoral degrees and over 100 years of collective experience in Lifestyle Redesign. USC provides ongoing mentored training and opportunities for collaborative discourse among instructors to ensure mastery of content and consistency in content delivery across courses. Course Registration
Scheduled Course Series Track (Fall 2025 - Spring 2026) - click the links below to register
Late Registration Policy: A $25 non-refundable late registration fee applies to enrollments completed less than 7 days before a course’s start date. This fee covers administrative costs associated with processing late enrollments. No course extensions will be granted, and all work must be completed by course end date.
Cancellation Policy: To receive a refund, less a $50 administrative fee, cancellation notice must be received at least 10 business days prior to the course start date; no refunds will be issued after that time. Cancellation by instructor/USC will result in full refund.
On-Demand Course Series Track
Please note that, beginning with Core Course 2, all course prerequisites must be met in order to enroll in the course; this will be verified upon registration, prior to being granted course access. Prerequisites are listed within each course’s registration page.
Cancellation Policy: A refund, less a $50 administrative fee, will be made provided that a cancellation notice is submitted within 10 business days of registration, and the learner has not accessed the course yet. Cancellation by instructor/USC will result in full refund.
