Hi everyone! My name is Avery Lord. I am currently in my third year of undergrad in USC Chan’s Accelerated Bachelor’s to Doctorate program. I was born and raised on a tree farm in a small town in Oregon.
Before I discovered Occupational Therapy, I had always been drawn to working in healthcare. The knowledge that I could dedicate my life to healing people and helping them live healthier, fuller lives excited me. I quickly discovered, however, that blood and surgeries weren’t for me, but my desire and drive for helping others still persisted. In high school, I had the privilege to be involved with organizations where I discovered my passion for working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was then that I learned about Occupational Therapy, and I haven’t looked back since. I hope to go into pediatrics and work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I am also interested in travel OT, and entrepreneurship. One of my favorite parts of OT is how broad the field is, and I aspire to be a well-rounded therapist who can work in any setting. I can’t wait to continue my studies and start my fieldwork in the coming years.
When I am not in class or studying, some of my favorite occupations include lifting weights, traveling, kayaking, hiking, trying new foods, and of course spending quality time with my friends and family. I love being outdoors and am always looking for my next adventure.
At USC, I am Vice President of Best Buddies Club, serve as a trip leader for Peaks and Professors, and am a research assistant studying the effects of caregiver social touch in young children with ASD.
I am ecstatic to be a Chan undergraduate student ambassador for a second year. I love meeting prospective students and sharing information and my experience in a program and school that I adore. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions; about OT, the BS-OTD program, USC, or life!

Hello! My name is Cara Ishisaka, and I’m from Sacramento, CA. I recently graduated from USC with a B.A. in Psychology and an Occupational Science (OS) minor, and I’m excited to be part of the E-OTD Class of 2028!
My admiration for OT grew out of my community involvement from working with children and the elderly. Whether it was assisting with homework, leading enrichment activities, or helping nursing home residents exercise, I found satisfaction in seeing that something I did was helpful to someone else in some way — be it academically, emotionally, mentally, or physically. And through my sister, who works alongside occupational therapists as a physical therapist, I learned how OT combines teaching and medicine to help individuals reconnect with their passions and find greater fulfillment in their lives. This resonated with me, affirming my decision to pursue this career. Plus, I couldn’t let my sister have all the fun as our family’s go-to therapist!
In laying the groundwork for my future career, I met Dr. Uyeshiro Simon at orientation and asked for advice on graduate school preparation. She suggested pursuing the OS minor to enhance my skills and knowledge. What I thought was a mere addition to my resume, transformed into an opportunity for greater self-discovery and growth. From practicing self-compassion to learning adult life skills and using animal-assisted therapy to improve patient morale and promote humility, I recognized the various ways that occupational therapy can be applied and gained the skill set needed to be the best OT possible.
During my free time, I love baking, exercising, traveling, and exploring scenic city spots, especially in good company. You can also find me trying new cafes and indulging in overpriced lattes around the city!
USC and the Chan community have been instrumental in my OT journey, and I’m proud to represent them as an ambassador. Feel free to reach out if you want to know more about OSOT, USC, or campus life. Fight on!

Hello everyone! My name is Ciara Greenaway. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m currently in my second year in the USC Chan BS-OTD program.
Ever since I was young and my mom decided that I would be raised on Doc McStuffins, I knew I wanted to work in healthcare. I fell in love with the idea of being able to help others. In high school, I didn’t quite exactly know what I wanted to go into but I knew I was interested in therapeutics. Strangely, I first discovered occupational therapy when I was doom scrolling on TikTok the summer before my senior year. After hours of going down a wormhole of “OT-Tok” I knew I wanted to be an occupational therapist. I fell in love with the holistic approach and the wide variety of specialties occupational therapy offers.
This summer, I even got the opportunity to intern for a pediatric occupational therapy clinic where I got to see concepts I learned be applied right in front of me! As I continue my journey on the accelerated pathway, I can’t wait to see what else is in store and especially learn more about the Neuro field.
In my free time, I love reading, exploring nature, going to restaurants, and going to museums. I also love exploring new occupations! This is my first year being an Chan Ambassador and I’m so excited to represent Chan and share more about the hidden gem at USC!
Cristian(he/him/his)

Bay Area / Philippines
First blog coming soon!
Kumusta! I am Cristian Gutierrez Bueno. You can call me Cristian! I am in the Post-Professional Master’s Program (PP-MA) in Occupational Therapy. I immigrated to the Bay Area in 2019, but I was proudly born and raised in the Philippines, where I also received my Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Santo Tomas.
One of my favorite occupations growing up was watching shows with my family, and most of those shows were medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy! As a kid, the scenes where they uncovered medical mysteries through unconventional methods always seemed so cool to me. From then on, I found myself dreaming about being in those rooms, solving medical cases as a neurosurgeon, and maybe even earning the nickname “McDreamy,” after the show’s iconic neurosurgeon, Dr. Derek Shepherd.
Kidding aside, all of that changed when I discovered occupational therapy through a career orientation. I guess I was one of the lucky ones who didn’t get the typical elevator speech about what OT is as my first introduction to the profession. I remember writing down that to be an occupational therapist is to be a tagapagkalinga ng hiraya, which roughly translates to being caregivers of hopes and dreams. I fell more in love with OT when I had the opportunity to work with clients across different fields from pediatrics to geriatrics, mental health, neurological cases, and many more!
Looking back, I realized I still ended up solving cases just not in the way I imagined as a child. I became a pediatric occupational therapist, where I get to solve cases by getting to know not only my clients but also their families. I help them navigate life’s challenges by equipping them with the skills they need while building on their strengths so they can participate meaningfully in the occupations that matter most to them. I am also excited to serve as the Student Ambassador for the PP-MA program! I look forward to connecting with fellow students, sharing my experiences, and welcoming new members into our community.
I know this is far from the busy, adrenaline-filled environment of an operating room, but I would gladly be called “Teacher Cristian” instead of McDreamy, as long as I continue to be a tagapagkalinga ng hiraya.

First blog coming soon!
Hi everyone! My name is Kayla Bell-Davis, and I am in the class of 2028 E-OTD students here at Chan. I am so excited to serve here as a student ambassador! I am originally from the east coast and prior to Chan, I obtained my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the illustrious Howard University.
Ever since early childhood, I have always felt a commitment to serve. Through my volunteerism, I was introduced to Special Olympics. Within this experience, I’ve grown a passion in assisting those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. During my time at Howard I had the privilege of serving as an intern for Special Olympics North American HQ and also completed a fellowship with the organization after graduation.
While I enjoyed the population I was working with, I realized I valued hands-on experience the most. I had plans to attend medical school and become a pediatric neurologist. However, I received an introduction to occupational therapy unexpectedly when a family member of mine needed to receive therapy, and they shared with me how pivotal that therapy was in their recovery. After further research, I realized that OT was the destination that was just right for me.
Fast forward to today, I am so honored and proud to be here at USC Chan. While I was nervous to take the leap of faith and move so far from home, the open arms I have received from Chan have given me a wonderful welcome into the Trojan Family. As an ambassador, my goal is to assist students through their brand new transition and help them make the most out of their time at Chan. Outside of school, I enjoy exploring the city, going to the movies, bringing others joy, hanging out with my best friends, and sneaking in a nap whenever I can!
Any questions you have feel free to reach out if you would like to know more! Fight On!
Madisson(she/her/hers)

Los Angeles, CA
First blog coming soon!
Hi everyone! My name is Madisson Calma, and I am in my fourth year studying Cognitive Science with a minor in Occupational Science. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California!
I initially chose the Occupational Science minor because of its unique perspective on how the meaningful activities and routines that we all have play a huge role in our well-being. As I continued taking classes, I discovered that it had an interdisciplinary approach that related to my major and strengthened my understanding of the connections between the brain, behavior, and healthcare. While my career goals are toward health administration, the Occupational Science minor has given me a broader understanding of health and well-being that extends across a wider range of career paths than I originally thought. Its strong emphasis on holistic, person-centered thinking has shaped how I think about creating healthcare experiences that can better support patients, families, and communities.
Outside of school, I enjoy staying active at the gym or pool, traveling, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with friends and family. I also love saying yes to something new and seeing where it will take me!
I’m so excited to serve as a USC Chan Student Ambassador and share my experiences with other students! If you have any questions about USC, the OS minor, getting involved, or anything else, feel free to reach out and connect!

Hi everyone! My name is Makayla Lui, and I am a current first-year student in the E-OTD Class of 2029! I recently graduated from USC with a B.A. in Cognitive Science with a minor in Occupational Science (OS), and I was born and raised in a small beach town in Palos Verdes, CA.
What makes me proud to be a Trojan is having the privilege of being able to pursue higher education in no greater place than Los Angeles, my very own backyard. I’ve had the unique experience of attending college on both coasts (USC and NYU!), which has given me a greater appreciation for the diverse perspectives and cultures that influence how we learn and live. I appreciate engaging with others about shared experiences and cultural values that shape our unique identities, and I enjoy deconstructing the framework of these experiences to better understand ourselves and the world around us.
After enrolling in OT250 during my undergrad at USC, I developed a strong foundation in how meaningful occupations shape our identity and quality of life, and I was eager to declare an Occupational Science (OS) minor to further complement my studies. My Cognitive Science major lies at the intersection of human cognition and technology, and when paired with the OS minor, has given me great insight into the role of adaptive health strategies and technological initiatives viewed through a holistic lens. Through the program’s unique offerings and interdisciplinary nature, I have gained experiences that have helped develop essential skills for life and beyond, and in doing so, I have been able to not only grow personally but also academically while engaging in this tight-knit community!
My favorite occupations include reading, listening to music at the beach, watching movies, shooting film photography, going to concerts, and stationery shopping! I look forward to engaging in collaborative initiatives to promote the field of Occupational Therapy while building meaningful relationships with like-minded students from diverse backgrounds. Feel free to reach out for any advice or with any questions! Fight On!

Hi everyone! My name is Marilyn Soliven Martinez. I received my B.A. in Anthropology from UCR and my MPH from USC, and I am currently part of the Entry-Level OTD Class of 2028!
One of my biggest goals in life is to give back to my community. Growing up in a multicultural household, I was exposed to the healthcare field at a young age, especially through my relatives who worked as nurses. Seeing their dedication inspired me and helped me realize that I wanted to give back to the community that helped raise me.
I discovered OT through one of my close friends, who knew she wanted to become an OT before I did. I was inspired by her determination, which led me to reflect on what I wanted for my own future. During my last semester in my MPH program, I realized I was not finished with my education. I wanted to apply to a program that values advocacy, supports its students and faculty, and creates a holistic and culturally inclusive environment. I met with one of the student ambassadors, who shared their experience with me, and I also spoke with Dr. Speights, who encouraged me to apply. I only applied to one program, and the rest is history!
Outside of class, one of my favorite occupations is traveling anywhere and everywhere I can! I also love reading books, visiting museums, and planning fun adventures with friends. Another goal of mine is to give back by supporting nonprofit organizations that protect the environment and endangered species.
As an ambassador, I look forward to sharing my story, supporting others, and building meaningful relationships across diverse communities!
Sabrina(she/her/hers)

Kaohsiung, Taiwan
First blog coming soon!
Hello! My name is 鄭惠珊 (Hui-Shan, Cheng), but I prefer to go by Sabrina. I was born and raised in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and received my bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from National Taiwan University. I am currently a student in the Post-Professional Master’s program here at USC Chan.
Growing up, I was passionate about child development and originally planned to become a teacher. However, I discovered that my real passion lay in supporting children with neurodiversity and helping them succeed in school through volunteering. I first learned about OT at a high school career exploration event and was immediately drawn to it! I loved how this profession supports children’s development by using mindful, everyday activities. That initial spark has stayed with me ever since.
Outside of class, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, travelling, reading, and trying new restaurants and cafes. It is my honor to serve as a student ambassador this year, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Sydney(she/her/hers)

Guam, USA
First blog coming soon!
Hi everyone! My name is Sydney Packbier. I was born and raised on the island of Guam and I am currently in my second year of undergrad in USC Chan’s Accelerated Bachelor’s to Doctorate program.
Growing up in Guam helped me appreciate the importance of understanding each person’s culture, environment, and way of life. These values inspired my passion for helping people reach their full potential and participate more fully in the activities that matter to them. Throughout middle and high school I had the opportunities to experience this initiative both inside and outside of healthcare settings. Whether it was through elementary school sustainable living programs, coaching individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through Special Olympics, or volunteering in hospital rehabilitation clinics, I learned the value of planting seeds in order to foster independence and meaningful growth within people.
I discovered Occupational Therapy towards the end of my junior year of high school and everything clicked immediately. From that point forward, I approached the internships, volunteer experiences, and programs I loved with a clearer purpose and the goal of becoming an occupational therapist. I am especially passionate about working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and hope to pursue this interest through pediatric or hospital-based practice. I am also interested in the intersection of entrepreneurship and occupational therapy and would one day like to open my own clinic.
At USC, I am involved in organizations that inspire me and allow me to continue to make a difference through my passions. I am the Events Coordinator for Best Buddies club and member of the fundraising team for Dream On 3. Outside of being a USC Chan student, some of my favorite occupations are hiking, trying new coffee shops, being in the ocean, and traveling. I love occupational therapy’s initiative to assist individuals in returning to doing the everyday activities that make their lives meaningful.
From the moment I stepped onto campus, I knew USC Chan was the right choice for me. Every student, faculty member, and staff member I have met has such genuine passion and excitement for occupational therapy, and that energy is contagious. I love talking about the program and am excited to serve as a USC ambassador. I look forward to showing prospective students explore what their futures could hold, and feel welcomed into the Chan community. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions at all!
