About the organization
The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens is a collections-based research and educational institution serving scholars and the general public. Each year, The Huntington:
- Facilitates thousands of educational experiences with schoolchildren, school teachers and community groups in art, history, literature and botanical science through special tours and programs (both fee-based and drop-in)
- Engages the public through classes, workshops, performances, lectures and our annual summer program for children, Huntington Explorers
- Partners with Boys and Girls Club, YWCA, and other organizations serving various local communities
- Hosts more than 750,000 visitors
About the residency
The successful candidate for residency at The Huntington will:
- Provide a needs assessment for the creation of inclusive educational programs at The Huntington
- Provide key consultation support in the creation of an integrative public program plan for families of all abilities
- Provide support for children with special needs for our public programs
- Create and implement a roster of inclusive tailored programming for existing community partners with a range of support needs (differently abled individuals, families with kids with autism, etc.)
- Support for Explorers camp (occurs in July) as a one-on-one support staff for campers with autism and/or special needs
- Liaise with the Community Engagement Coordinator and other public programs staff to support the creation and implementation of inclusive programming throughout the year
In addition to implementing programming, the OTD resident would also provide program evaluation, with pre- and post-program surveys. The resident may also provide training and ‘best practices’ modeling for staff and volunteers.
Eligibility
The successful candidate for residency will have:
- Experience working with children of various ages, with various special needs and abilities, particularly young visitors with autism
- A passion for learning, and a personal interest in art, history, literature and/or science education
- Expertise developing multisensory ways of learning and other modes of differentiated instruction
- A positive attitude and a strong desire to work with community groups
Financial support
The resident may be eligible for a merit-based scholarship in conjunction with this residency.
