Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most significant emerging technologies with high potential to impact occupational safety and health, which has been highlighted as a national priority in the founding of the National AI Initiative and as a key component of the NIOSH Future of Work Initiative. Under this Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) agreement, Dr. Roll will work with key internal (NIOSH) and external collaborators to develop resources for AI-related hazards and opportunities, contribute to the development of a preliminary framework for the consideration of those hazards and opportunities across various workplace settings, and collaborate on additional research projects pertaining to AI in the workplace (e.g., situational awareness, diversity, access, privacy). This work will lay a foundation for further development of public guidance on safe approaches to artificial technology in the workplace.
