Song, M., Martin, J. L., & Kinney, D. (2023). Development of pedagogical resources on diversity, equity, and inclusion for occupational therapy faculty at a public university in Texas. Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity, 16(1), 77-82. Full text Show abstract
Background. Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) must acknowledge the challenges marginalized communities face in healthcare. The purpose of this project was to explore how OT faculty at a public university in Texas use diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) concepts.
Methods. OT faculty (n = 29) were recruited to complete a survey. Questions addressed the degree to which DEI concepts were taught, why certain concepts were not taught, and the resources needed to address DEI more comprehensively in this OT program.
Results. A majority of respondents (61%) stated that they taught DEI concepts. Gender and sexual diversity , immigration and refugee experiences, and racism were the areas least covered in their curriculum.
Conclusion. Pedagogical resources were developed to enhance faculty skills and knowledge in promoting DEI in their classrooms.
