Alumna earns highest award from Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists

Susan Forwell MA ’89, PhD ’05 was awarded the 2018 Muriel Driver Memorial Lectureship Award by the Conference of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists. The award honors a CAOT member who has made outstanding contributions to the profession through scholarship, education and practice. She delivered her lecture, titled “Recapturing the Joy of Occupation,” during the association’s June 2019 conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Forwell was the first scholar working in Canada with a doctorate degree in occupational science, which she earned from USC in 2005 with a dissertation examining the psychometric properties and applicability of a quantitative inquiry method with people who have multiple sclerosis. Her research projects focus on the relationships of occupation to health and well-being, citizenship and life transitions. She currently heads the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at the University of British Columbia located in Vancouver.
