The growing older adult population coupled with a shortage of an adequately trained health care workforce requires innovative models of care delivery and training to create a geriatric competent primary care workforce. The USC Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) is a three year, $2.5 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). USC GWEP is developing comprehensive interprofessional geriatric primary care-based assessment and training programs with an emphasis on interprofessional training and team-based care. Our focus is on improving recognition and care for patients who have cognitive impairment or have a dementia diagnosis, and who, in addition, have significant medical co-morbidities.
