Where did you receive your bachelor’s degree and in what major?

I received my bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation therapy from Sun Yat-sen University.

What do you like about occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy was my favorite course when I was an undergraduate student. It gave me an opportunity to rethink my daily activities, to creatively redesign my daily life, and to experience other people’s lives. I can still remember one time I explored our city in a wheelchair during OT class. When you look into daily occupations with other perspectives, you will be surprised by how simple things make lives so different.

What are some memorable moments from your residency experience?

I worked in the Healthy Aging Research and Technology (HART) Lab during my residency. We celebrated “Friendsgiving Day” remotely. That evening, everyone in the lab got together on Zoom and shared our favorite pictures, the stories behind those pictures, and our favorite drinks. We talked and laughed a lot. It was the first time I heard other people’s stories. That made me feel so warm. I am glad that I am in a team that is full of humor and love.

How do you plan to advance OT in China?

To advance OT in China, I plan to apply the leadership skills I learned in the dual-degree program. Before I can improve OT in China, I need to improve myself first. That is, to be a responsible, motivated, creative and flexible occupational therapist, researcher and educator. I aim to provide clients with evidence-based clinical practice and establish clinical pathways for different clinical conditions to help improve the quality of OT services in China. I want to be a researcher with strong critical thinking and creativity skills — exploring new possibilities for clients with disabilities. I will also improve OT education in China and expand the number of OT practitioners so that more and more people can benefit from OT services.

What are your favorite occupation(s)?

My favorite occupation is walking with my parents. When I lived at home, I used to go for a walk with them every morning. We enjoyed the sunshine, the gentle breeze in the morning and the flowers on the road we walked. We talked a lot while walking. Sometimes my father drove us to the beach, and if we were lucky, we would bring back some shrimp or crab. This was the most enjoyable part of my vacation.
