The China Initiative team hosted the PKUHSC delegation at the USC Chan Division and the 2024 AOTA Inspire Conference & Expo in Orlando, FL. This was the first time the two teams met since the COVID-19 pandemic. The delegation included honorable representatives from the PKUHSC Office of International Cooperation, Peking University First Hospital, Peking University University Third Hospital, and Peking University Sixth Hospital.

The agenda at the Division included a number of site visits and meetings with Chan faculty and leadership members. The China Initiative Team, Global Initiatives Team, and a USC Chan student ambassador welcomed the PKUHSC delegation at their hotel and led them on a tour of the USC Health Science Campus (HSC) and the Center for Health Professions (CHP). They then took a campus shuttle to visit the Occupational Therapy Faculty Practice (OTFP) clinical site and met with the Director, Dr. Chantelle Rice Collins. Conveniently located within the same building, they then toured the Musculoskeletal Sonography and Occupational Performance (MSOP) lab and met with the Director, Dr. Shawn C. Roll.

During the two-hour lunch, the PKUHSC Delegation had an engaging discussion with the Associate Dean and Chair of the Chan Division, Dr. Grace Baranek, about our partnership over the years. In the afternoon, the PKUHSC Delegation learned about the Fieldwork to Capstone Pathway in the Chan entry-level occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) program from the Chan Director of Fieldwork and Doctoral Capstone Coordinator, Dr. Deanna Mannarelli, and about our global partnerships from Dr. James Lee of the Chan Global Initiatives Office. Representatives from PKUHSC expressed interest in various programs at USC, including the Summer Occupational Therapy Immersion (SOTI) program, the Sensory Integration Graduate Certificate, and the PhD program in occupational science.

The Delegates’ visit concluded with a panel presentation by the five USC-PKUHSC dual-degree Cohort 3 students and one PhD student from PKUHSC, highlighting their learning experiences at USC Chan. The Delegation, some of whom were mentors to these students in their master’s program, provided feedback and asked insightful questions regarding the students’ research and clinical residencies, and their future professional development.

After visiting the Chan Division, the Delegation went on to Orlando to attend the AOTA Inspire Annual Conference & Expo. For some, this was their 5th time attending an AOTA Conference since the beginning of the partnership with USC Chan. The Delegation attended several events, accompanied by Cohort 3 students who received Division Student Leadership Awards to support conference attendance, including the Opening Ceremony, Keynote Address, Presidential Address, and sessions and booths about innovations in OT, among others. One USC-PKUHSC dual-degree graduate from Cohort 1, Dr. Zhizhuo Wang, now an instructor in the OT program at Fujian Medical University, presented a poster titled Can a Virtual Reality Simulation Be an Effective Tool in Activities of Daily Living Skills Training? A Mixed-Methods Study. Additionally, the USC Chan Alumni Reception was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a reunion of the China Initiative community, including the PKUHSC Delegation, past and current China Initiative residents, and dual-degree current students and graduates.
